Module 3~Rhymes of History Technology

According to Dr. Thornburg (Laureate, 2008), Rhymes of History is the “affect or impact of a new development that rekindles something from the distant past.   My example of a Rhymes of History technology would be the fax machine.  The fax machine rekindles the Morse code machine.  People use Morse code to telegraph and transmit information over wires. The information was sent as a series of electrical signals.  I can recall in the movie “Lincoln” when he was sending urgent messages through Morse code.  The most common use was sending out distress signals. Today you can just pick up a phone for emergencies and send important files and documents via fax.  The video below shows a class in the 1940’s learning how to use Morse code.

  1. I like that you went with something that was not brand new technology. I very seldom use a fax machine.

  2. Brigit,

Your fax machine and morse code machine example is GREAT! I love the video - enhances understanding of what the morse code was like. As Melissa stated above, the fax machine is almost obsolete; however, those who have lower tech skills and companies who rely on hard copies still very much so rely on facsimile technology. I now have an app on my smartphone ("ScanToPdf") that allows me to take a .pdf picture of anything and e-mail or text it to the receiving party. I know the days of the fax machine are numbered!

Great post. (sorry I'm late posting mine...)

  3. Hi Brigit,

I hope this one takes, but just in case I have posted two other comments. I think, your connection from the fax to morse code is an interesting one. I had not thought of that, bit it is true. In the movie Independence Day they also used Morse code.

  4. I like the topic of the fax machine that you chose. The fax machine is a tool that has been very popular and continues to be popular as people continue to use this tool currently. You provided great examples on this topic.

  5. Hi Team,
We had to send several documents to Tallahassee and the fax machine was the easiest way to send them immediately. We could have scanned them and sent them via email but it would have taken to long.
    Thanks for the comments.
